Let’s face it – lunch is recess for us working stiffs. So, where can you go to make the most of those precious lunchtime minutes? West Chester has a fabulous lineup for lunchtime options, especially during the warm months. Here’s your guide on where to go, no matter your schedule or your budget…

On the Go

Looking for lunch in a flash? If you’re really tight on time, for spare change you can get a hot, salty pretzel at the West Chester Pretzel Factory (125 N. Church St., 610.430.7100). And, if you REALLY like your coworkers, you can even pick up a bag of 50 or 100 pretzels to share. If you want something a little more substantial, head to the nearby Pita Pit (139 W. Gay St., 610.918.PITA) for a tasty pita stuffed with your choice of fillings. They even deliver for those of you who can’t pry your hungry bodies away from the grind.

Impressing a Client

If you really want to schmooze somebody, take them to Spence Café (29-31 E. Gay St., 610.738.8844). I originally thought Spence was just a hippie hangout with reggae music on Wednesday nights, but during the day the place bespeaks professionalism. Sure, their lunch menu consists of only soups, salads and sandwiches, but they’re fancy schmancy soups, salads and sandwiches.

Lunch Date

If somebody likes you so much that they can’t go their whole workday without seeing you, I suggest meeting at the romantic Limoncello Ristorante (9 N. Walnut St., 610.436.6230). Split a gourmet pizza and watch the magic happen. They do have a $9 lunch buffet available as well, but be warned: slurping spaghetti is only cute in Lady and the Tramp.

For the Cheapwads

If you work at a non-profit like I do, chances are you’re not looking for an expensive five-course meal during your quick lunch break. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t treat yourself to a delicious lunch! Penn’s Table (100 W. Gay St,, 610.696.0677) is the perfect spot to sit outside and enjoy a tasty sandwich without breaking the bank. If you’re really low on cash, head to Wally’s Weiner World (Corner of High and Market Streets), a true West-Chester classic. I recommend eating your $1.50 hot dog Julia-Roberts-in-Pretty-Woman style: barefoot in the grass in front of the courthouse, preferably accompanied by a cute guy in a suit.

Best Escapes

If you really want to get away from workday stress, go to the funky High Street Cafe (322 S. High St., 610.696.7435) for some of West Chester’s finest cuisine. Their Cajun and Creole dishes are so amazing that you might have trouble making it back to the office. If you’re really not interested in working the rest of the day, grab an outdoor table at Iron Hill (3 W. Gay St., 610.738.9600). Go ahead and order a pint with your spectacular lunch — hey, it’s 5 o’clock somewhere, right?
