On my usual drive home from work down Gay Street on Friday, I noticed the sounds and picket signs of some protesters outside of Gilmore’s Restaurant. I cranked up the heat and rolled down my window to hear shouts of “Boycott Gilmore’s!” and “Save the Animals… say no to Foie gras!”

It appeared to be a group of animal rights activists who were not happy with the fact that Gilmore’s serves Foie gras and hosts a regular Foie Gras Extravaganza event.

While many fine-food lovers enjoy this dish without batting an eyelash others are being very vocal about about the way it is prepared are taking a stand against it.

Foie gras, French for “fatty liver,” is made from the grotesquely enlarged livers of male ducks and geese. A recent article from WC Dish writer Bob Delgrosso goes into the depths of this process and the debate.

I’d love to hear more about this group. Who are you and what did your signs say?

There's a great website that details just how nasty all of this foie gras business really is: www.nofoiegras.org. Why not have a look-see!

Most folks, whether they eat meat or are vegetarian, agree that foie gras production is truly cruel and barbaric. Cities and countries are banning the dish left and right because they recognize this to be exactly the case.

Lastly, remember the story of the "Three Little Pigs"? Are you sure you want your house made out of wood and not bricks, Justin? ;)

    Hi Mary,

The protesters were from C.A.R.E who are a great group of caring people who do work with animal and environmental issues. You should look them up on the web for other events -- they also do vegetarian/vegan get-togethers at local restaurants, which are lots of fun.

Justin -- They protest not to argue against personal choice but to educate people about the cruel production of foie gras, which most people don't know about. Unfortunately, the ducks can't choose not to be force-fed for liver expansion. Rest assured, you'll probably be able to live in your wooden house for as long as you'd like!

"Let them eat cake" or whatever else they want. Why protest personal choice? Next thing you know we won't be able to build houses out of wood.
