wport-final

I had the pleasure of visiting a friend’s hometown this weekend in Williamsport, PA. I had been there before but I hadn’t been aware of the culinary delights that were hidden in “The Port”.

Soon after we arrived my friend’s father was telling me about a lunch special he loves to get in town, “I get a Cosmo, chips and a pickle for $3.49.” I did the math in my head and thought it certainly was a steal for a mixed drink and I pictured him holding the classic Sex in the City cocktail and munching on a few chips with a pickle and the image just didn’t seem to work.

So I interjected, “Wait, what’s a Cosmo?”

The response wasn’t spoken. I was simply given a look as if I had a zillion heads that were spinning and shooting lasers. I racked my brain desperately to think of what the hell it could be. I had gathered it was some sort of sandwich, but I was stumped. “It’s a toasted cheese sandwich,” he told me with as much intensity as if I had asked who Britney Spears was.

“Like a grilled cheese?”

“No, it’s on a roll. A Cosmo.”

This wasn’t going well, so I waved the white flag. “Listen, I’ve never heard of that, I’m sorry. Is it special to this area or…?”

“It’s a toasted sandwich, like a open-faced sandwich. Ya’ know?”

“Is it just cheese then?”

“No,” (I can tell he’s irritated and not sure if I’m kidding or just really dumb) “it’s usually just cheese or cheese with Canadian bacon (oh- duh, of COURSE why didn’t I know THAT… cause Canadian bacon is on a ton of sandwiches?) or ham on it and it comes with lettuce, tomato, onions and a hot pepper relish.”

Realizing it’s basically a toasted sub, I tell him I’d love to try one and to prove that I’m not intentionally being dumb I Google “Cosmo.” Here’s what I find:

Wikipedia came up with the definition of “Submarine sandwich”
with a general overview of what a sub is and then the following bullet points (Note: A Cosmo is known ONLY in one town in the entire country… Williamsport, PA.).

Other names

The Final Dish:

After showing that the term is only used in Williamsport we all were on the same page and decided to get a Cosmo for dinner to give it a try. Pictures and reactions coming next…

  • I enjoyed your blog. I'm originally from Williamsport, PA and found you on google. I needed to do a little research because I wanted to respond to one of the readers of my current blog to define for her that a Cosmo is not only a cocktail but a sandwhich as well. I was amazed to find out in your writing that the Cosmo was created and only exists in Williamsport. How silly. I did not know that. I will glady link your posting in my response to my reader.

I went to PA College of Technology in Williamsport and many of my friends were locals. The Cosmo is everywhere there! Why eat it cold when you can have it toasted?

I lived in Williamsport for about 4 years, moving there when my mom banished me from the state of New Jersey (and for good reason, too). I ate many a cosmo in Williamsport. This was back in 1985 through 1989, and the term 'Cosmo' was in full swing then. After moving to southeast PA and settling in the West Chester area, I still catch loads of attitude from my NJ siblings for saying 'hoagie' (Sub is the ONLY proper terminology for them). I never once uttered cosmo around them for fear of losing my visiting rights to the state of my birth. I miss those cosmos, and $3.49 is indeed a good deal.

Thanks for bringing back some memories.
  • You're not alone! That could have easily been me!
  • I think I may have actually heard of a Zeppelin, I worked in Phoenixville/KOP for a few months which might explain that.

The only other time I've heard of a Cosmo is at Penn State (main). They used to serve the "Chicken Cosmo" - google it. It was a breaded chicken patty on a roll. I never understood the "Cosmo" part but this sort of explains it!
  • Oh yeah, I forgot to mention... has anyone actually used the term Zeppelin in Phoenixville or Norristown?? That one is new to me too.
